Hey everyone stopping by the blog! I apologize for not updating with the frequency I have been able to the past weeks/months (it was almost daily, at least multiple times a week!).
I am currently serving as arts editor and looking for full-time writing jobs, doing Insanity and rockin' out in the little free time I have, which leaves me little time to blog about the things I would like to.
Hopefully I'll be back in action soon and thanks for all the support of this blog and The Metal Show over the years! I will rock again!
-Randy
UPDATE: RANDY IS BACK! NOTICE THE HUGE AMOUNT OF UPDATES TODAY / TONIGHT, I'LL HOPEFULLY BE ABLE TO KEEP AT LEAST DELIVERING A POST OR TWO (IF NOT MORE) A DAY INBETWEEN JOB HUNTING. THANKS FOR THE KIND WORDS AND SUPPORT!
Your source for metal news, concert updates and CD release dates. The Metal Show on KRUI 89.7FM may be over, but the blog lives on!

While You Were Studying / At Work: A Heavy Metal News Update
I had my first final today of my very last finals week at The University of Iowa (and went on-air for my last edition of The Metal Show earlier tonight) and I now am ready to pass out ... but first I wanted to comment on some of the bigs news of the day in case you missed it.
1) It's Offical: Joey Belladonna Rejoins Anthrax

That's right, the crazy-haired metal vocalist with a wide vocal range, that about 50% of Anthrax fans hate and 50% love, is back in the band. Most of the day's talk has been on the topic of Belladonna being the "third choice" for the group and its new album.
If I remember right, it was Belladonna himself that wanted to leave Anthrax after the reunion (although it was probably from the encouragement of Scott Ian and Charlie Benante), so now he is ready to come back because Ian and Benante frankly have no other option.
This means the deal is on Belladonna's terms, which I think works for the band's relationship at this point. This shit is more wild than the Van Halen saga.
Anyways, Belladonna will be joining the band on the Big Four Tour with Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer and is set to begin writing and recording an album for an early 2011 release with the band. Who knows, maybe all that tension will make for a hard-hitting thrash record???
2)Death digital albums and the long-rumored second Control Denied album will finally be released.

That's right, Relapse Records announced a partnership with Perseverance Holdings Inc. and Chuck Schuldiner's family to reissue digital releases of the older hard-to-find Death albums (such as Spiritual Healing), in addition to the second Control Denied record (Note: as of this time, not sure when these digital releases will be available in US).
Watch a previously unreleased recording of Death's "Crystal Mountain" below:
3) Twisted Sister's Jay Jay French says band will "never tour again"

The longtime guitarist revealed this news in a recent interview with Noisecreep. Interesting that a band is finally realizing that nostalgia tours aren't always all they are cracked up to be. Although plenty of bands have proven French wrong as well.

Lack of Updates: Back on Track Soon?
You may have noticed there haven't been any posts since last Monday. Last week was crazy and this week is only going to get more intense (actually the worst of it was today). I will try and update when I can, but also make sure to tune in to The Metal Show from 8 to 9 p.m. tonight if I don't collapse from exhaustion!
Oh and I'll be putting a link to my review of Slash's solo album tomorrow too, so check back for my thoughts on that one.
UPDATE: So I ended up passing out from exhaustion and missing my show on Monday night, ha ha. I didn't actually think it would happen!
My week is still very busy, so I am updating this post with the perfect song for a rough week below... "Pisses Me Off" courtesy of Chris Caffery!

The Metal Show is back on the air tonight!
After a semi-relaxing Spring Break it is time to get back to the ol' daily grind, but at least that also includes The Metal Show TONIGHT from 8 to 10 p.m. only on KRUI 89.7FM in Iowa City.
Non locals/radioless folks can tune on online right here (assuming the streams are up and running, which they should be).
While you are eagerly waiting for tonight's show (featuring new music from Armored Saint, Finntroll, White Wizzard and more) you can watch this cool live Overkill video and, if you are in the 80s mood, the latest Ratt music video for the track "Best of Me".
Rock Over London. Rock on Chicago. Wheaties, Breakfast of Champions!

THE RETURN OF THE METAL SHOW ON KRUI 89.7FM!

If you didn't notice the change at the top of the page, The Metal Show will be rocking the airwaves starting next Monday, January 25, from 8 - 10 p.m.
As usual, I will try and keep The Official Metal Show Metal Blog updated as much as possible (and as much as my other work obligations will allow).
News is still pretty slow right now, but hang on tight, because things will begin picking up in the metal world before you know it!
As always you can listen to the metal on KRUI 89.7FM in Iowa City, or stream it over the Web on KRUI's official site.
I will leave you with some music from Chimaira's 2009 album The Infection. I didn't really listen to this CD all that much when it came out, but the last few days it's all I've touched.
It kind of fizzles out about 3/4 of the way through, but the first 5 tracks are so are just heavy slabs of groove. The song below is called "The Disappearing Sun".

Best Metal Releases of 2009
New Year's partying got the best of me and delayed my year-end list until now. Don't forget to check out the comprehensive Year in Review list for other notable metal releases.
Randy's Top 10 Albums of 2009
10) Obscura – Cosmogenesis

Reasoning: I'm not the biggest fan of tech-death metal, but Obscura does it right on Cosmogenesis, creating an album that is both skillful and memorable.
9) Kreator – Hordes of Chaos

Reasoning: On Hordes of Chaos Kreator proves it still has the balls of steel required to deliver true thrash metal, leather, spikes and all.
8) Revocation – Existence is Futile

Reasoning: I'll admit I only listened to this album all the way through about a week ago, but I'm glad I did. Existence is Futile provides a look back at what made thrash so great, all while advancing the scene forward in terms of heaviness.
7) Alice In Chains – Black Gives Way to Blue

Reasoning: Alice In Chains surpassed all expectations with Black Gives Way to Blue and William Duvall is an excellent musician to boot.
6) Mastodon – Crack the Skye

Reasoning: Crack the Skye may not be my favorite Mastodon album, hell I'd consider it more prog rock, than metal. But to the mainstream this IS metal and it is GOOD. If an album can bring this much attention to the metal scene, while still being unique, then it deserves the accolades.
5) Candlemass – Death Magic Doom

Reasoning: Candlemass provides the sleeper hit of the year with Death Magic Doom. Stoner/doom metal bands of today just can't compare to the greatness of this band.
4) Ace Frehley – Anomaly

Reasoning: Anomaly may not be metal, but it is great rock 'n' roll. Plus Ace Frehley influenced enough metal dudes to be legit in the scene. See why by checking out this release.
3) Cannibal Corpse – Evisceration Plague

Reasoning: I never was all that into Cannibal Corpse, but "Evisceration Plague" may just be the perfect death metal song. Check out my review of the album here.
2) Shadows Fall - Retribution

Reasoning: Although Shadows Fall's latest album Retribution may have the lamest cover of the top albums of 2009, it has some of the best content. I had almost lost hope with one of my favorite modern metal bands, until hearing this release, which is the band's best since The Art of Balance in my book.
1) God Forbid - Earthsblood

Reasoning: Earthsblood is God Forbid's greatest album and my choice for best album of 2009. Why? Because this album is a breath of fresh air in the metalcore genre - containing excellent songwriting that blends heavy and clean vocals to perfection.
Other Random Awards:
Best Local Metal Album:
Dark Mirror – Portrait of Evil(Des Moines)

Why it got the award: Power thrash metal outfit Dark Mirror saw a lot of changes in 2009, but the band's latest incarnation put out its best album yet. Listen to some tracks on the band's Official Web site.
Also check out:
Identity Crisis – Finding Balance (Iowa City)
Most Overrated album of 2009:
Baroness – Blue Record

Why it got the award: There's no doubting Baroness released what is possibly the best album of its career. But best album of the year? I think not. Maybe I just don't fully appreciate "stoner metal," but after favorably reviewing the album I didn't feel a need to listen repeatedly.
Biggest Controversy:
Rammstein – "Pussy" Music Video

Why it got the award: Well, those crazy Germans in Rammstein made a hardcore porn video for the first single "Pussy" off the surprisingly good Liebe Ist Für Alle Da. There isn't much else to say. Check it my original post on the video here.

Have a Merry Metal Christmas Everyone!

Hopefully all you metalheads are rockin' out to some of your favorite tunes and spending time with family/friends/booze and all that good stuff.
I hope to keep updating the blog regularly over the Winter Break, even if music news is slow around these times. I will try for a post a day and soon will also be writing about some of my favorite metal albums of 09 (and possibly some sort of abbreviated decade list, we will see).
Below are two Christmas songs to get into the spirit with. If you want to see a bunch more cool songs check out Decibel's top 12 metal Xmas list (these are just two that made the cut).
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/insert other holiday here.

Somebody "Check My Brain"...
So... this week looks to involve very little sleep. And to top things off I might have to miss The Metal Show tomorrow night due to the Buckethead concert...
I hate to miss shows, but I can't pass up Buckethead! Please forgive me! The Metal Show will be back next Monday September 21, bigger, badder and better than ever, with new tunes from Ace Frehley, Shadows Fall, Megadeth, 3 Inches of Blood, The Black Dahlia Murder and Dying Fetus, not to mention some great metal classics in between.
Now onto the good news. Alice In Chains released another video, this time for the song "Check My Brain". A great Alice In Chains tune!
This is much more straightforward than the video for "A Looking In View", but still shows the band rockin' out in all its glory.

Bluegrass, Shitty Europop Covers and Lesbians
Finals week at the University of Iowa is almost here and that marks the end of The Metal Show on KRUI 89.7 during the Spring 2009 semester. However, hopefully yours truly will be back doing the show in a few weeks for the summer edition and you can count on the show being back over the airwaves for the Fall 2009 semester.
Just because there is no Metal Show for a few weeks doesn't mean this blog is going anywhere! Expect plenty of new updates on news and music releases. (Such as the recent leak that Slayer's new album might be out on July 7!)
First off I wanted to share this video of the band Slaughter of the Bluegrass covering the At the Gates classic "Blinded by Fear". This version is awesome and the band is hoping to do a full album of bluegrass-metal covers if time and money permits.
Thank the dudes over at Deciblog for finding this one. Note that the link given leads to an interview with the band.
Also you can check out the band's official Web site and vote for songs for them to cover.
Speaking of covers, here is another cover that isn't nearly as cool by a band called The Berzerker. They recently covered the T.A.T.U.'s one-hit-lesbian-wonder "All the Things She Said". The video is stirring up quite the bit of controversy with its footage of screaming dudes and fetish actress lesbians.
Props to a kind of shitty gimmick band for thinking up a marketing scheme to get their name out there.
Note: The Berzerker are not to be confused with the band that coined the hilarious song "Berserker" that was featured on the Clerks soundtrack. That band is called Love Among Freaks and the song can be heard below.

The Metal Show will not be airing tonight...
I am posting to regrettably inform listeners that The Metal Show will not be airing this Tuesday, March 10, 2009.
Feel free to listen in as Mt. St. Helen's Vietnam Band will be interviewed in place of the show and will be playing at The Mill (I am holding a rally to throw eggs at the band when they play, so feel free to join in there!).
Seriously, though while I may be angry that my show isn't airing tonight, I am always in support of the bands and understand they want some exposure on the radio (just don't do it during The Metal Show next time).
Next week is Spring Break so The Metal Show will be off the air then also.
TUESDAY MARCH 24TH WILL MARK THE DATE THAT THE METAL SHOW WILL BE BACK ON IN ITS ENTIRETY FROM 6-7PM ON KRUI 89.7
Now I end my post with an excerpt of the mighty lyrics of Manowar. Remember, there is no stopping metal!
Fight fight fight
Fighting the world every single day
Fighting the world for the right to play
Heavy Metal in my brain
I'm fighting for Metal 'cause it's here to stay
Fighting,fighting,fighting the World
I been fighting the World
Fighting,fighting,fighting the World
I been fighting
Fight for a living - Fighting the World
Fight for a living - Fighting the World
Fight for a living - Fighting the World
Fight
See my brother standing by my side
Only got one thing on ever mind
Radio's playing this nation wide
Turn it up louder till we all get fright
